Christmas is just a couple of weeks away and I can (almost) guarantee this:
You’re going to receive at least one gift that makes you contemplate, ‘What the.... were they thinking?’
Maybe a gaudy ill-fitting jumper or a box of double cream chocolates - even though you’re lactose intolerant.
If the giver is in front of you, what do you do?
My guess is you WOULDN’T say, ‘What were you thinking? Do you even know me?’
You’d likely smile, thank them and decide later what to do with it.
Maybe you re-gift it, take it back to the shop (don’t you love a gift receipt?) or tuck it away.
Receiving critical feedback is a lot like those gifts. It’s something offered to you with good intent but may not thrill you.
It’s how you respond that makes the difference.
🎁 Feedback is a Gift 🎁
I know it’s a cliché, but feedback, like a gift, comes in all shapes and sizes.
Sometimes it’s exactly what you need - a thoughtful insight that helps you grow.
Other times, it feels like a pair of novelty socks.
No matter how it’s wrapped, feedback is always an opportunity. Treat it like a gift (with the receipt thoughtfully enclosed):
🎁 Accept it with gratitude, even if it’s not what you wanted.
🎁 Take time to consider its value and what it means to the giver.
🎁 Decide how you’ll use it: keep it, rework it or let it go.
The real question isn’t whether the feedback is perfect; it’s how you choose to respond.
Your Feedback Challenge
Reacting is instant and emotional.
Taking responsibility – the ability to respond - is intentional.
The real trick is pausing, considering and then deciding how to handle the situation.
This week, think how you receive feedback.
Ask yourself: Do I react or do I respond?
When you receive feedback decide how to use it; embrace it, adapt it or let it go.
When you combine feedback with gratitude, it’s a powerful tool for growth.
